At lunchtime, Tessa reached the music hallway and stopped. Studio A was usually full of singers. Today its door was closed, and the hallway was quiet. Had rehearsal been canceled?

Through the window, she saw a teacher speaking beside a rattling fan. His voice was barely audible over the noise; Tessa could see his mouth moving but could hardly hear a word. A technician pointed to a sign: “Keep out while repairs are under way.” The closed door was a precaution, a way to prevent anyone from walking into the work area.

Malik arrived with a torn message. Only “temporary arrangement” remained. “Whatever changed, it sounds as though it will last a short time,” he said. He suggested checking the adjacent room—the one directly beside A—but its door had no rehearsal sign.

The complete notice and the hallway plan were on the office desk.
